WHAT IS IT & WHY DO IT?
What is Nordic Walking?
Nordic Walking is very similar to ordinary walking but with many more benefits because it works all of the body not just mainly the legs, like cycling or running. It requires some training but it’s relatively easy to learn the basics – most people only need/want one or two training sessions and can then practice on Nordic walks, and at home.

The technique originated in Finland because cross-country skiers wanted to train and keep fit in the summer. You use two specially designed poles with a clip-on, half-glove strap to help propel you forwards, so it’s good for your upper body muscles, your arms and your core, as well as your lower body muscles. You use more than 90% of your skeletal muscle and burn more calories than walking without poles!

WHY NORDIC WALK?
Once you’ve got the hang of the correct technique it becomes a whole body workout (without feeling like one!) and the exercise boosts mental health. It can offer something for everybody from rehab to high-level fitness but even if walking at a slow pace it can still work and tone your upper body and arms. It’s also a fun, outdoor, aerobic activity which is sociable and encourages flexibility and increased cardiovascular activity.

So, Nordic walking can be an active hobby or a sport but one of the main reasons people like it is that it provides an opportunity to be out and about enjoying nature in some stunning countryside. Many many of our members like looking at and admiring the natural world en-route, including some beautiful views often with some wild or farm animals and a stunning range of flowers, trees, fungi etc.
